Fellow Legionnaires, family, and friends, We hope that this newsletter continues to find you and your family members healthy and doing well. We continue to support our community through The American Legion’s founding principles of four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.
We continue to be fortunate to have member Zabrina Seay, the Wilson County VSO, to address veteran’s questions about claims and other related matters. We joined her and others Veteran Organizations for booth duty at the State/WC Fair @ Veterans Building.
We held an Executive Committee meeting on 2 August. On 9 August meeting we had three Guest Speakers.
Gaye Lynn Wilson, Wilson Rides. They help to preserve the quality of life and foster a connected community for older adults. Rides are free for veterans, their spouses, and household pets. Rides are to and from your residence and destination; both must be in Wilson County. https://wilsonridesinc.org/, 615‐622‐5557.

We are fortunate to have the Wilson County VSO Zabrina Seay to address veteran’s questions about their claims or initiate a claim during our meetings. She was at the MJSAC on 31 May 2-5 pm to assist members.
Once again, we had Mrs Cynthia Brown, 615-574-9927 from Mid Cumberland Meals on Wheels addressed our members. http://www.mchra.com/meals-on-wheels She works out of the @ Mount Juliet Senior Activity Center. Anyone age 60 and older who is home bound, or meets the needs as determined by state guidelines, is eligible for Mid-Cumberland Meals-on-Wheels. She is soliciting help in delivery of nutritious meals to home bound seniors, including veterans. Training is provided and a background check is required before starting.

To Our Mt. Juliet Legionnaires, Friends and Families:
The Exchange Club of West Wilson County and American Legion Post 281 are so excited to be hosting our 10th Annual Honoring America’s Flag Display May 27-30, 2022.
We will display our flags at the Town Clock Center / Train Station. This Flag event which will display 250 flags over a 5-day period is the most patriotic event in Mt. Juliet. Our Field of Flags is visited by approximately 500 people over a 5-day period.
In the past 9 years, we have raised over $120,000 and sold over 3,900 American Flags. All funds raised are given to many veterans, non-profits, and needy families in Wilson County.

We need a strong turnout of volunteers tomorrow for assembling the flags used in our Honoring America's Flag event, at Nancy and Barry Britt's home.
Address for the Britt's home is: 291 Quill Road, Mt. Juliet, with a 0900 show time. It's indoor work, and typically a good time of camaraderie. Come join us!

Notice for all Post 281 members and all Veterans who would like to attend.
Once again, the wonderful folks at Mission BBQ at Opry Mills are providing food for tonight's meeting at the Mt. Juliet Senior Activity Center, starting at 6:00 PM. Our Commander, and his Commander (Gloria), are adding to the meal and bringing dessert too. All attending tonight will be assured to have plenty to eat. If you've thought about inviting a guest veteran to attend with you, here's a great and tasty opportunity.

At our next regular meeting on 12 April, we will be voting on new Officers for our Post for the coming year. We will accept additional nominations up until the call for the vote to take place. Following members were nominated, most by outgoing officers, from those in attendance on 8 March 2022, and agreed to serve if approved. Members cannot nominate themselves.

On 8 March meeting, we had two Guest Speakers, Dan Walker, Wilson County 10th District Commissioner and Phil LaPrad, Mobility Chairmen from the Murfreesboro Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 1089 Dan Walker spoke on the current state of Wilson County and presented a number of projects being worked on. Commissioner Walker’s topics included Budget Items; American Rescue Plan Grant Funds; Employee Pay Plan Review; School Board Land Approval of the purchase of a 110-acre school site at Double Log...

Phil Laprad, Mobility Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans of America, (VVA) Chapter 1089 of Rutherford County, is a veteran who is serious about continuing to serve his country, his community, and fellow veterans.
Phil and his crew install chair lifts, exit/entry ramps, handicap ramps and chair lifts for vehicles, handicap beds and bathroom aids, and assemble hospital beds in homes. Phil also services used mobility scooters and installs vehicle carriers. He also helps maintain handicap equipment with follow-on servicing for veterans and their family members who cannot qualify for service by the VA. It may be a temporary solution, but if nothing else he’ll do what he can until the VA can take over. Phil and his crew also collect older mobility equipment, like beds and ramps, and services them to be used by another veteran. Often, Phil and his crew provide help to veterans before the VA can get the approval process.
There is no cost to veterans.

Legion Post 281 Members and Friends,
All of you know about the devastation that occurred in Mayfield, Kentucky last month, just before Christmas, resulting from the tornadoes. American Legion Post 26 of the town of Mayfield was deeply affected. Their building was all but destroyed along with the rest of the downtown area. As you would expect of former military guys and gals, the members of that post have united to serve affected members and the many citizens that were deeply impacted, while they personally attempt to recover as well. I am proud to report that many Legion posts from across the country have donated as well.
My Uncle Darrel Snow, a Korean War era veteran, was a member of American Legion Post 26 of Mayfield. I proudly wore my American Legion service cap at his funeral and teared up when I offered a final salute to an uncle and fellow veteran as he reported to “The Post Everlasting”. He was a proud American. As with all veterans, we share a bond of dedication to our country, our communities, and to each other.
We, members of the Mt. Juliet American Legion Post 281, want to reach out and offer our empathy to the community, so we are giving a cash donation of $500 to Legion Post 26 of Mayfield, to be given to whomever the Post deems to be in need. Other members from Post 281 of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee are donating additional sums, as well. If anyone would like to join us, for whatever amount, please let me know via Facebook private message, or through our www.mtjulietalpost281.com website “contact us,” and I’ll add it to our total donation.
I’m taking a check to Post 26’s Commander this coming week. I know he will be grateful for whatever is given.

On 8 and 9 January, Adjutant Ward, Service Officer Hibbett, member Mike Moss and I participated in the Tennessee Department Midwinter Conference held in Murfreesboro. We took part in various sessions of being presented. Our Adjutant Terry Ward is also the current TN Department Oratorical Chair. He presented the upcoming Oratorical Contest details for attendees.

Post 281 Christmas/Holiday Dinner was held on 14 Dec at the Rutland Senior Living Place Banquet Room. The Roast Beef or Vegetarian meals were lauded upon by all in attendance. We had 72 in attending.

We hope that this newsletter finds you and your families healthy and doing well. We publish our newsletter following each monthly meeting to keep you better informed. We are a little late in getting this out.
To keep our focus, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. These remain our goal for your post in our community.
Membership remains as our strength and ability to meet our mutual obligations to the four pillars. We had 25 members in attendance. We currently have 244 members. We look forward to more members joining our gatherings in the future. We ask that membership dues be paid during our monthly meetings in person by cash or check. You may also pay by mailing dues payments to our PO Box 67 address above. Dues are $45. 2022 membership renewal began last 1 July.

Join us this Saturday the 11th at noon, as we gather with our families and friends to commemorate the significance of this particular day in our country’s history, while celebrating the common bond that we Veterans and Legionnaires share in our service to making this nation so great.
Burgers, Hot Dogs, Bar-B-Que and the supplementary “fixins” supplied by the post. Bring your favorite side dish to share with 6 to 8 others along with lawn chairs.
Pavilion 2, Charlie Daniels Park, Mt. Juliet, starting at noon. Entertainment provided by recording artist Forest Brandon (and a new post member too) , games, karaoke, and perfect weather to enjoy.
