SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:History of Veterans Day\nWorld War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28\, 1919\, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles\, France. However\, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice\, or temporary cessation of hostilities\, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason\, November 11\, 1918\, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” \nVeterans Day continues to be observed on November 11\, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date\, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism\, love of country\, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. \nHistory of Veterans Day

SUMMARY:U.S. Army Birthday - 1775
DESCRIPTION:On June 14\, 1775\, the Second Continental Congress founded a united army to bring the 13 colonies together in the fight for independence from Great Britain. The U.S. Army was officially born. The Army was founded just months into the American Revolutionary War and predates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Over its nearly 2½ centuries of service\, the Army evolved from a ragtag militia hastily formed to fight against Britain to the largest branch of one of the most powerful militaries to ever exist. Today\, over 450\,000 active-duty service members\, as well as about 300\,000 National Guard soldiers and 175\,000 reservists make up the Army — the largest of the six military branches.

SUMMARY:Columbus Day
DESCRIPTION:Significance of Columbus Day 2024\nColumbus Day 2024 is an annual federal American holiday that occurs on the second Monday in October each year. Columbus Day 2024 is a day that commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas and his discovery of America on October 12\, 1492. \nHistory of Columbus Day\nPeople\, throughout the world\, have celebrated Columbus’s voyage since the colonial period. Historically\, the Italian-born explorer set sail in August\, 1492. He intended to chart a western sea route to China\, India and the renowned gold and Spice Islands of Asia; instead\, he landed in the Bahamas\, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century. Columbus Day became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906\, and later became a federal holiday in the United States by proclamation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937. \nThe date on which Columbus arrived in the Americas is also celebrated as the Day of the Race (Día de la Raza) in Latin America and some Latino communities in the United States. Columbus Day 2024 celebrations are known to be controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the Native American people. \nIt has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus’ actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honoured for discovering North America\, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America. \nTraditions of Columbus Day\nTraditionally\, celebrations of Columbus Day 2024 include lessons about Christopher Columbus and his voyage at schools. Throughout the United States\, Columbus Day 2024 has evolved into a celebration of Italian-American heritage. Communities host parades and street fairs with colourful costumes\, music and Italian food. In many cities and towns that honour indigenous peoples on this holiday hold activities such as traditional dance and lessons about Native American culture.

SUMMARY:Gold Star Mother's Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on Gold Star Mother’s Day the United States president calls on all Americans to display the nation’s flag and hold appropriate meetings to publicly express their love\, sorrow\, and reverence towards Gold Star Mothers and their families. Government buildings are also required to display the flag. \nAmerican Gold Star Mothers\, Inc. is an organization of mothers whose sons or daughters served and died while serving their nation in times of war or conflict. It organizes major events that take place on or around Gold Star Mother’s Day each year. Previous activities included a Gold Star flower wreath laying service\, as well as an afternoon tour of President Lincoln’s cottage in Washington DC. \nA gold star flag is displayed by immediate family members of a military member who died while on duty. The flag is placed to let the community know that a loved one died while serving. \nThe gold star flag features a gold star placed over a blue star. The number of gold stars on the flag corresponds to the number of family members who died. \nThe Department of Defense authorizes the following immediate family members to display the flag: Spouses\, Parents\, Children\, Siblings\, Stepparents\, Stepchildren\, Stepsiblings\, Half-siblings\, Adopted parents\, and Adopted children. \nThe gold star designation originated during World War I\, when families displayed small banners with a blue or gold star. A blue star represented a family member serving in the armed forces\, while a gold star represented a family member who died while serving. \nIn addition to the gold star flag\, Gold Star family members can also wear a gold star lapel button. The button was established in 1947 and is awarded by the US Department of Defense.

SUMMARY:Patriot Day
DESCRIPTION:Patriot Day is a United States national observance that honors the memory of those who were killed in the September 11 attacks. It was first observed in 2002\, after the proclamation by President George W. Bush. \nOn September 11\, 2001 al-Qaeda launched a series of coordinated terrorist attacks upon the United States\, killing almost 3\,000 people. In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events\, President proclaimed September 14\, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11\, 2001. A year later\, September 11 was made a national day of mourning referred to as Patriot Day.\nThis observance has been proclaimed annually since 2002. \nIn 2009\, President Barack Obama rededicated it as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. It is not a public holiday therefore government offices\, educational institutions and businesses do not close on this day. On Patriot Day\, the national flag is flown at half-mast on all United States government buildings and establishments. Individuals are also encouraged to display flags on their homes. \nA moment of silence is traditionally observed at 8:46 AM. Many organizations and establishments hold memorial ceremonies to honor the victims of 9/11.
