SUMMARY:Gold Star Mother's Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on Gold Star Mother’s Day the United States president calls on all Americans to display the nation’s flag and hold appropriate meetings to publicly express their love\, sorrow\, and reverence towards Gold Star Mothers and their families. Government buildings are also required to display the flag. \nAmerican Gold Star Mothers\, Inc. is an organization of mothers whose sons or daughters served and died while serving their nation in times of war or conflict. It organizes major events that take place on or around Gold Star Mother’s Day each year. Previous activities included a Gold Star flower wreath laying service\, as well as an afternoon tour of President Lincoln’s cottage in Washington DC. \nA gold star flag is displayed by immediate family members of a military member who died while on duty. The flag is placed to let the community know that a loved one died while serving. \nThe gold star flag features a gold star placed over a blue star. The number of gold stars on the flag corresponds to the number of family members who died. \nThe Department of Defense authorizes the following immediate family members to display the flag: Spouses\, Parents\, Children\, Siblings\, Stepparents\, Stepchildren\, Stepsiblings\, Half-siblings\, Adopted parents\, and Adopted children. \nThe gold star designation originated during World War I\, when families displayed small banners with a blue or gold star. A blue star represented a family member serving in the armed forces\, while a gold star represented a family member who died while serving. \nIn addition to the gold star flag\, Gold Star family members can also wear a gold star lapel button. The button was established in 1947 and is awarded by the US Department of Defense.

SUMMARY:Patriot Day
DESCRIPTION:Patriot Day is a United States national observance that honors the memory of those who were killed in the September 11 attacks. It was first observed in 2002\, after the proclamation by President George W. Bush. \nOn September 11\, 2001 al-Qaeda launched a series of coordinated terrorist attacks upon the United States\, killing almost 3\,000 people. In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events\, President proclaimed September 14\, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11\, 2001. A year later\, September 11 was made a national day of mourning referred to as Patriot Day.\nThis observance has been proclaimed annually since 2002. \nIn 2009\, President Barack Obama rededicated it as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. It is not a public holiday therefore government offices\, educational institutions and businesses do not close on this day. On Patriot Day\, the national flag is flown at half-mast on all United States government buildings and establishments. Individuals are also encouraged to display flags on their homes. \nA moment of silence is traditionally observed at 8:46 AM. Many organizations and establishments hold memorial ceremonies to honor the victims of 9/11.

DESCRIPTION:Membership dues for next year (Jan-Dec\, 2025) shall be paid by October 20\, 2024\, per the Department Adjutant. SUMMARY:Flag Day
DESCRIPTION:https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/june-14 \nSince 1916\, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14\, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes\, parades\, and other patriotic observances. Prior to 1916\, many localities and a few states had been celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a flag day proclamation every year.
