How We Serve

The “Four Pillars” of The American Legion are: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. These pillars represent the core areas of focus for the organization, guiding their work in supporting veterans, promoting national security, fostering patriotism, and investing in the well-being of America’s youth.

Here’s a more detailed look at each pillar:

  1. Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation: This pillar focuses on supporting veterans through various means, including access to healthcare, assistance with claims, and rehabilitation services. It encompasses efforts to address the VA claims backlog, improve access to VA healthcare, and provide support for veterans with special needs.
  2. National Security: This pillar emphasizes the importance of a strong national defense and supporting military personnel. It includes advocating for the needs of active-duty service members, promoting quality of life for military families, and working towards a full accounting of POW/MIAs.
  3. Americanism: This pillar focuses on promoting patriotism, civic engagement, and community pride. It includes initiatives such as flag protection, voter registration, and supporting youth programs like the Boy Scouts of America and Boys State.
  4. Children & Youth: This pillar is dedicated to the well-being of America’s children and youth. It includes supporting programs that foster physical, mental, and moral growth, as well as initiatives that address issues like child welfare, intellectual disabilities, and family support.
