FROM THE COMMANDER:
Fellow Legionnaires, family and friends As always, we hope that this newsletter finds you and your families healthy and all doing well. Both VA TVHS campuses in Murfreesboro and Nashville and local medical facilities within Middle Tennessee continue to administer the COVID 19 vaccinations and Flu shots.
We continue to celebrate our community’s involvement and success with Memorial Day weekend 9th Annual Honor America’s Flag Event. We thank Nancy Britt and her family and the West Wilson Exchange Club for our continued dual effort.
As our community opens back up, we look forward to more members attending our monthly meetings and becoming involved in our various activities. We currently have 237 members. Please check your membership card to make sure it is current. It’s that time of year, 1 July annually, to start renewing your membership for 2022. Some of you have invalid information on in the American Legion database, addresses, emails, changed phone numbers, etc. Each member needs validate this data yourself and renew your membership at https://mylegion.org/PersonifyEbusiness/Home

ASSEMBLE:
At 1800 hours, Commander Max Wix opened the doors to the Mount Juliet Senior Activity Center for Post 281 to assemble and conduct business. Pizza and drinks were provided for those in attendance by the post by our Sgt at Arms Delmar Smith. Opening prayer was offered by Chaplin Rolus Smith. Guests present: Phil LaPrad, from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1089, Murfreesboro.
Honoring America’s Flag, Jones Park, Mt. Juliet, this Memorial Day Weekend
Honoring America’s Flag started off in a soggy way with the rain that flooded our area this morning, but many stayed the course and the opening ceremony was conducted at the planned time. Honoring America’s Flag event runs throughout the weekend and concludes on Monday, May 31st, at 2:00 PM. Check out Channel 2 New and Channel 4 News at 5pm and 10 pm to see the coverage. Come out and join us.

ASSEMBLE: At 1755 hours, the Executive Director of the Mount Juliet Senior Activity Center Valissa Saindon opened the doors to the center for Post 281 to assemble and conduct business. Pizza and drinks were provided by the post for those in attendance and members socialized among other members as coordinated and supplied by the SGT at Arms, Delmar Smith. Opening prayer was offered by Chaplin Rolus Smith. Three guests were: Peter Bohling, Jerry Chatfield and his wife Patti Chatfield. Both Chatfields joined the post that evening.

We sincerely hope that this newsletter finds you and your families all doing well. We hope most, if not all of you, will have received the COVID-19 Vaccinations. We have sent numerous notifications on where you may get the vaccinations. This includes both VA TVHS campuses in Murfreesboro and Nashville and local medical facilities within Middle Tennessee.
We continue with our Post’s “Buddy Check” of all of our members. This program ensures all members are doing well and is not in need of our assistance. I am still seeking to develop a Phone Call Team to assist in this effort. This may include members who currently can’t leave their residences. These “Buddy Checks” are required to be done twice a year. So, expect phone calls, emails and letters asking to see how you are doing and requesting that you re-validate your contact information. You will need your membership number and password previously used to revalidate your address, phone and email information and renew at https://mylegion.org/PersonifyEbusiness/Home
We have 230 (96%) renewals of a 239 TN Dept Goal. Some members’ data remains invalid, including phone numbers disconnected or changed, leaving us to wonder as to the member’s status. Please check your membership card to make sure it is current…
Max D. Anderson
Max D. Anderson Born near Davenport, Nebraska, in 1919, to John William Franklin Anderson and Lena Mabel Lambert Anderson, Max D. Anderson grew up on a farm near Springview. WWI had ended as well as the Great Influenza Pandemic. Barnstormers and Lindbergh’s flights had piqued Max’s interest in the new field of aviation. He learned to fly in 1938 over the objection of his parents who thought aviation a frivolous sport. Having enlisted in the Navy at the outbreak of WWII, Max was assigned to the naval air station in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he met Flossie, the love of his life. Their love and devotion to each other only grew over the next 76 years.
Max’s aviation career began in the Navy. He instructed pilots at Cuddihy Field in Corpus Christi and flew the PB2Y, a flying boat, on supply missions over the Pacific during WWII. He became a corporate pilot, flying for Pearl Equipment Co., McDowell Enterprises, and Delta Coal Co. He also flew for the state of Tennessee. He enjoyed flying, believing that he flew in the best era of aviation.
Max loved the Lord, serving Him in local congregations: Hermitage Hills Baptist Church and Victory Baptist Church. He loved helping people, whether it was repairing neighbor’s lawnmowers or setting up flags each year for Mt. Juliet’s Field of Flags. He was practical in showing God’s love for each person he met.
In their later years, Max and Flossie enjoyed the sense of community and belonging at Rutland Place and Carrick Glen. In Max’s almost 102 years, he lived a full and active life. He is survived by wife Flossie; daughter, Janice (William); daughter-in-law, Sally; grandchildren: Andi (Jim) and Scott (Lacey); great-grandson, Cash; sister, Ruth Ewen. He is preceded in death by son, Glen Anderson; sister Phylis Linse. A visitation for Max will be held Monday, May 3, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Victory Baptist Church. Services will be held 1 pm Monday at Victory Baptist Church with Dr. Chuck Groover officiating. Interment to follow at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Rutland Place Staff Christmas Fund, Victory Baptist Church or the Nashville Rescue Mission.
Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the US Navy and Tyler Cates American Legion Post 281 Honor Guard.

Passing of our beloved Max Anderson
It is with great regret that we share the sad news of the recent passing of our beloved WWII veteran and member of our post, Max Anderson. Max was 102 years old. Final arrangements for his service have not been made, but know we will share it with the post when the details are completed. Pictured above is Max and his wife of 77 years, Flossie, from their marriage in 1944.
